In a city as old as the hills, bohemian and benevolent, an old and “wise” neighbourhood, with a scent of flowers and a fado crooning, where the Visigoths, the Moorish, the nobility, the fishermen and ordinary people left their marks and had a strong influence on its life and told its story again and again in a different and charming way, hides a little architectural gem, the first Brazilian Art Nouveau style I have ever met, combined with Neo-Moorish. It may seem surprising, but it seems that, by the end of the 19th century, at least in the warm and gentle Lisbon, this type of Art Nouveau was in fashion and the master of the house, João Antonio Santos wanted to add much more charm to the Alfama neighbourhood, through a special and opulent construction, in this style.
A few years later, after it had been abandoned, it regained its glamour thanks to the two partners who did it up and turned it into one of the smartest hotels I have ever seen...
