Thailand abounds in temples in the same way as Bucovina abounds in dozens of monasteries and churches. But one of them seemed absolutely incredible to me and is, frankly speaking, unique in the Land of Smiles: The White Temple or Wat Rong Khun. Despite the fact that it may seem kitschy at first sight, you`ll soon discover that the temple is extremely elaborate.

The artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat began working at the temple in 1997, and after this year`s earthquake, which caused a lot of damage, he decided to rebuild and to dedicate it to his wife. The white temple is a Buddhist one, and its architecture is so sophisticated, that, while you go through it, you`ll be amazed to discover how surrealistic the representations of the Buddhist teachings are.

Angels and demons, fantastic sculptures, mystical creatures, superheroes join you at every corner, in this fabulous temple. It`s all painted in white and it also has white mirrors, to show Buddha`s purity and the fact that his wisdom shines above everyone. The only building, out of the 9 buildings of the temple, which is not white is the gilded, opulent bathroom, to show the human, profane nature.
