Would you like to know why I associate this tiny village, brimful of people and things, with a painting? Because it is the very image of a tiny work of art. A painting begun by the Moors who had settled on its lands a long time ago and left some parts of their cultural inheritance, to be later continued by the Genovese, the Venetians and the local people who drew its forms and defined its colors. Facing the Bay of Salerno and having the Emerald Grotto nearby, Amalfi has the richest history of all the villages on the coast. It is a delightful agglomeration of scented, small squares, a mix of beach and harbor-it used to be a great maritime power-and a picturesque panorama of alleys and old buildings in the historic center. Don`t expect to see a vast land, the village is small and intimate, but extremely welcoming, especially in summer but also in autumn, when it is crowded with people, tourists in particular who want to fathom its mystery. The Dome of Amalfi and the extremely good Limoncello are other two reasons why you should visit it. Now you can see why Wagner had a predilection for it, but also Gore Vidal, passionately and irredeemably in love with it and the Italian coast…
