Cicchetti, wine libraries(enotecas) and Bellini
They invented ”l`arte di mangiare bene”, they brought l`amore in the world`s cuisines and “il piacere” in the moments spent around the table. I say like everybody says ”I love Italian food” and I invite you to leisurely taste the goodies I discovered in the restaurants and trattorias of the terrific and romantic Venice.
Once you get there, I should tell you not to miss tasting cicchetti, a kind of typical snacks and miniature appetizers with vegetables, meat or sea food, and all sorts of other combinations.
Colored list of restaurants:
• At Osteria All`Arco
and Osteria da Carla
you are going to have some super duper gastronomical surprises and moreover, you will understand what tradition, culinary creativity and variety mean, when it comes to starters a l`italiano, which you must relish along with a glass of prosecco or red wine, the way locals do.
Wine shops are at every step in Venice, so, you should enter at least one, to taste an ombra(a glass of red wine) or a prosecco one, from Veneto region , or, why not, of other origin. In Osteria Bancogiro, I Rusteghi where besides wine you have charcuterie and different sorts of cheese
and Al Volto (where you can find some fish cicchetti and delicious sea food), you are also going to see “wine libraries” with beautifully arranged bottles, packed with the best of the best wines, with impressive selections, having a long tradition, going back in time; the love and care for Bacchus`s liquid is quite obvious.
• Alle Testiere is like a mouthful of fresh air, within the heart of the city and has the perfect mix: an extremely tasty cuisine, super fresh ingredient, a first class feast, a cozy and intimate ambience, a simple décor and mussels with lemon and mint ,an octopus salad with crunchy vegetables and some potato gnocchetti with baby squid and cinnamon that you lick your fingers!
• San Marco Osteria, as simple as its décor seems, the food is unexpectedly relishable and the ambience is really pleasant. The duck and the octopus salad are perfectly cooked
• Le Bistrot de Venise is a glamorous space, with rare wines and fine cuisine, spiced with French influences, here and there, a place with a rich history, and with a Venetian risotto with vegetables and sea food and handmade ravioli with cheese, aromatic herbs and super duper sweet and hot sauce!
• Terazza Danieli is, to my mind, an absolute superlative of beauty when it comes to spectacular views over the lagoon of Venice, accompanied by a first class meal. If you fancy a romantic dinner in a swanky place, it`s the perfect choice
• At Quadri Restaurant you can have a fancy dinner in an equally fancy place, with an amazing cuisine and an exclusivist refinement.
• Da Fiore is among the best known restaurants in La Serenissima, with a Michelin star, an old Venetian tavern turned into a top pub, where the squid with thyme, peas and ginger, gratin tagliolini with chicory and ravioli with fish, artichoke, ginger and lobster sauce are also star dishes!
• Al Vecio Marangon is the kind or restaurant I came across, while I was walking and I realized that I had to stop and taste some Italian dainty dishes. Therefore, I found myself in front of one of the best Venetian style octopuses with polenta by its side, and some cicchetti buonissimi
• El Pesador, intimate and quiet, has good food, not so sophisticated but perfect for a lovely afternoon, it has got a terrace, too
• L`Alcova Restaurant, from Ca`Sagredo Hotel, offers you, besides marvelous antipasti, fillet of organic veal with grilled vegetables, or marinated salmon salad, sesame and fat free yogurt, everything being based on “Back to Nature” concept.
Colored list of bars:
• Bar Longhi, at Gritti Palace is as famous as the artist whose name it bears, as refined and stylish, not only by its design with Murano glass and Venetian hand carved mirrors but also by its signature drinks and by its 100% authentic Venetian view over the Canal Grande
• Bar Dondolo, from Hotel Danieli matches perfectly with its special edifice that hosts it and is ideal for a tea dandy afternoon or for an Italian cappuccino as well as for a relaxing evening, with a good cocktail by your side…It counts among the best top 20 bars in Italy!
• Bar Tiepolo, from The Westin Europa&Regina, is one of my faves, for the view of Basilica of Santa Maria delle Salute, for the super duper cocktails, made with Campari, and for the state of mind it creates, a mix of intimate, relaxing&good life
• B Bar from the Bauer is a fancy bar with D.J at the weekend, with socialising, creative drinks, therefore, anything you want for a superb evening. And on top of it all, during the film Festival, it becomes full to the brim with celebrities who take part in all sorts of events, organized here, on special evenings.
• Bar Canale Terrace has a gorgeous view, almost the same as the one from Westin Regina,(as a matter of fact they are close to one another) it is cosmopolitan, cozy and offering
• Harry`s Bar is undoubtedly a must on the list of bars, not only because it was visited by Hemingway, Chaplin, Hitchcock or Woody Allen, but because of the invention of the famous Bellini cocktail. The décor is simple, to tell the truth, but although I expected the glass that the cocktail is served in to be a flute one (a champagne glass), I was surprised to see it served in a little glass, like the water glass, but it was very good
• And Caravellino is a very small and cozy bar
As a substitute for end
You can`t leave Italy especially Venice, unless you eat…ice cream. And not from anywhere, but from Gelati Nico, where Gianduiotto is at its place and where the magical recipes delight the very young ones and those over the age of 80 ! And drink a coffee at one of the historic cafes from Piazza San Marco: Florian, Quadri or Lavena.
