The City of Caves or the City of Gharapuri floats full of revelations on the Arabian Sea, close to the harbour of the old Bombay.
It's a magical spot, considered by many adventurers and connoisseurs to be one of the greatest archeological sites you can visit in a lifetime, a fragment of history related to human creativity,who fascinate all those who discover its beauty.
Elephanta Caves consist of two types of caves, a group of Hindu caves, dedicated to the god, Shiva and another one, of Buddhist caves.
In 1987,the site was included in the UNESCO Heritage List, because of its extraordinary sculptures, with deities, stories and histories of faiths, myths and traditions of the Hindu culture.

According to legend, the name of the island was given by the Portuguese sailors who discovered a huge statue of a stone elephant, in the 17th century, when they brought to light most of the sculptures in here. Now, the statue reigns in Victoria Zoo Gardens in Mumbai.
Should you get to the former Bombay, don`t forget about the Elephanta. Take several hours to visit a magical spot, a terrific space that impresses by its anthropological and historical value.

P.S. Elephanta island is 10 km away from Mumbai and you arrive by boat in about 50 minutes; wherefrom boat dock until the caves, you'll find lots of souvenir stalls on both sides of the stairs that lead to the caves.
